Why StatusCut?

WhatsApp Status only takes short videos, so a long video gets trimmed and the rest is lost. Cutting it into parts by hand is slow and easy to get wrong: parts go out of order, get posted twice, start on a frozen frame, or the audio drifts.

StatusCut does the whole job in a few taps. You pick a video and a part length, StatusCut cuts it frame-accurately, and then you post the parts in order. Big buttons, clear numbers and "Posted ✓" marks mean anyone in the family can use it without help.

Features

Frame-accurate splitting
Every part starts on the exact frame, with no frozen first second and no audio drift. Original quality is the default: only the few frames up to the next keyframe are re-encoded, the rest is copied bit for bit.
15 · 30 · 45 · 60 · 90 second parts
A live timeline shows exactly where each cut lands before you start. A leftover tail shorter than one second is merged into the last part.
Mistake-proof sharing
Use Share all to send every part in one go, or send them one by one. The next part only unlocks once the previous one is posted, and Undo covers the times you back out of WhatsApp.
WhatsApp & WhatsApp Business
Show a button for either app or for both. You can post the same parts on two accounts, and each account's progress is tracked separately.
Status saver
Browse the photo, video and voice statuses you've watched, from both apps and from second accounts. Filter by All, Recent, Photos or Videos, play videos in the app, and save to your Gallery.
Works in the background
Long videos keep cutting after you leave the app. A progress bar shows in your notifications, and a "clips ready" notification opens the parts when they're done.
Recent splits
Your last 10 splits are kept, so you can reshare them any time. Clear them from Settings in one tap.
Your settings
Choose Original or compressed quality (High, Medium or Small), turn saving parts to the Gallery on or off, and pick which share buttons appear.
Private by design
StatusCut has no internet permission, no ads, no analytics and no account. Clips stay inside the app unless you turn on Gallery saving.
Tiny and fast
The APK is about 2 MB. It's native Kotlin with Jetpack Compose, and video is encoded by your phone's hardware through AndroidX Media3.

How it works

Pick a video, choose a length, cut, then share in order

Under the hood: why the cuts are frame-accurate

Most quick video cutters copy the stream without re-encoding, which means every cut has to land on a keyframe. That's why their clips often start with a frozen picture or with the sound a beat ahead.

StatusCut uses Media3 Transformer's trim optimisation instead. For each part it:

  1. re-encodes only the frames from the exact cut point up to the next keyframe, usually under a second;
  2. copies everything after that unchanged;
  3. clips audio to the same instant, so sound and picture stay in sync.

If a phone's encoder can't stitch the two pieces together, StatusCut re-encodes that part at the source bitrate. The cut stays frame-accurate and the quality stays the same. When you pick a compressed quality, the whole part is re-encoded at that fraction of the source bitrate.

Download & install

  1. Open Releases and download StatusCut-v1.0.0.apk.
  2. Open the file on your phone. If Android asks, allow Install unknown apps for your browser or file manager.
  3. Tap Install, then open StatusCut.
Requirement
Android 8.0 (Oreo, API 26) or newer
Size about 2 MB
Permissions Notifications (cutting progress). On Android 9 and older, storage too, but only if you save to Gallery.
Internet Not used, and not even requested

The SHA-256 checksum of every APK is listed in its release notes.

How to use

Split a long video into WhatsApp Status clips

  1. On the Split tab, tap Choose video.

  2. Pick a part length. 30 s is the default, and the timeline shows how many parts you'll get.

  3. Tap Cut into N clips. You can leave the app while it works, and progress shows in your notifications.

  4. Tap Share all parts. WhatsApp opens its chat list: choose My status at the top, then send.

    Prefer to go slowly? Use One by one and tap Send Part 1, then Send Part 2, and so on.

Tip

WhatsApp accepts up to 30 videos per share, so for very long videos StatusCut shares 30 parts at a time, in order.

Save WhatsApp statuses

  1. Watch the statuses in WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business first. WhatsApp only downloads the ones you open.
  2. In StatusCut, open the Statuses tab and tap Allow access.
  3. Android's folder screen opens on the right folder. Tap Use this folder, then Allow. You only do this once per app.
  4. Tap any status to view or play it, then tap Save to Gallery. Photos go to Pictures/StatusCut, videos to Movies/StatusCut and voice statuses to Music/StatusCut.

Note

Why the folder step? Since Android 11, apps can't read another app's folders directly. Granting one folder is Android's private, permission-free way to do it, and you can revoke it any time in system settings.

Settings (gear icon, top right)

Setting What it does
Video quality Original (default, nothing compressed) or High, Medium or Small (about 70%, 50% or 30% of the original size)
Save clips to Gallery Off: parts stay inside StatusCut. On: a copy also goes to Movies/StatusCut
Share buttons WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, or both
Recent splits Shows how much space your saved splits use, and clears them all

FAQ

WhatsApp opens a chat list, not my status. Is that right?
Yes. That's how Android sharing into WhatsApp works. My status is the first item in the list.
Some statuses I've watched don't show up
  • Pull them in with the refresh button. The list also refreshes when you come back from WhatsApp.
  • If you granted access with an older build, tap Allow full folder. That also picks up a second WhatsApp account and older storage locations.
  • Text-only statuses aren't files, because WhatsApp draws them itself, so no app can save them.
  • The line under the title (for example 24 statuses · 2 folders) shows what StatusCut found. Please include it if you open an issue.
Does splitting reduce quality?
Not with the default Original setting. Only the frames before the first keyframe of each part are re-encoded. WhatsApp itself compresses statuses when you post them.
Where are my clips stored?
In StatusCut's private storage, so your gallery stays clean. The last 10 splits are kept for resharing. Turn on Save clips to Gallery if you want copies there too.
The app closed unexpectedly
Open it again. StatusCut shows the error details at the top of the screen. Please open an issue with a screenshot of it, plus your phone model and Android version.

Build from source

You'll need JDK 17+ (tested with JDK 26) and the Android SDK (compileSdk 37). The Gradle wrapper downloads everything else.

git clone https://github.com/DeveloperSarim/StatusCut.git
cd StatusCut
./gradlew testDebugUnitTest     # unit tests
./gradlew assembleRelease       # app/build/outputs/apk/release/StatusCut-release.apk

Release builds are signed with your debug key unless you add your own key to ~/.gradle/gradle.properties. That file lives outside the repo, so the key is never committed:

statuscut.storeFile=/absolute/path/to/release.jks
statuscut.storePassword=********
statuscut.keyAlias=statuscut
statuscut.keyPassword=********
